Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and in the Northern Bulgaria region. The city landmarks include the Varna Archaeological Museum, exhibiting the golden treasures of Varna, the Roman Baths, the Battle of Varna Park Museum, the Naval Museum in the Italianate Villa Assareto, which is displaying the museum ship and former torpedo boat “Drazki”, the Museum of Ethnography in an Ottoman-period compound, which is featuring the life of local urban dwellers, fisherfolk, and peasants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ‘Sea Garden’ of Varna is the oldest and perhaps largest park in the town that contains an open-air theatre, the Varna Aquarium, which was opened in 1932, the Festa Dolphinarium, which was opened in 1984, the Nicolaus Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium, the Museum of Natural History, a terrarium, a zoo, an alpineum, a children’s amusement park with a pond, boathouse and ice-skating rink, as well as other attractions.

According to the EU Council Decision 2024/210 of 30 December 2023 on the full application of the provisions of the Schengen acquis in the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania, as of 31 March 2024, the Republic of Bulgaria is part of the Schengen area by initially abolishing checks on persons at internal air and sea borders. According to EU Council Decision 2024/210 of 12 December 2024 setting the date for the lifting of checks on persons at internal land borders with and between the Republic of Bulgaria and Romania, as of 1 January 2025, the checks on persons at internal land borders have been lifted.

Bucharest International Airport is located approx. 300 km away from Varna. The airport, named Henri Coanda International Airport, is located in Otopeni, 16.5 km north of the Bucharest city centre. Istanbul Havalimani Airport is the larger of two international airports serving Istanbul, Turkey. It is located in the Arnavutköy district on the European side of the city.
